Module 1 — How the assessment works · Lesson 1 of 5 · 8 min
The ICAO rating scale
ICAO describes language proficiency on a six-level scale. In Europe, the requirement is applied to pilots through EASA Part-FCL (FCL.055).
| Level | Name | In practice |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pre-elementary | Performs below the elementary level |
| 2 | Elementary | Limited to memorised phrases |
| 3 | Pre-operational | Communicates on familiar topics; often breaks down in unusual situations |
| 4 | Operational | Communicates effectively on common and work-related topics and copes with the unexpected |
| 5 | Extended | Communicates with ease; rarely misunderstands; handles complications well |
| 6 | Expert | Communicates naturally and accurately |
Why Level 4 matters
Level 4 is the minimum for pilots and air traffic controllers who use English in radiotelephony. Below Level 4 you cannot hold the endorsement for English.
How long your level is valid
Under EASA rules the re-assessment interval depends on the level demonstrated:
- Level 4 — every 4 years
- Level 5 — every 6 years
- Level 6 — no further re-assessment required
Reaching Level 5 or 6 therefore saves time, money and stress over a career.
